chalk pastels
A chalk-like crayon made from ground pigment with a binder added. Pastels offer more brilliant colors than crayons without the drying time of paint.
They are available in varying degrees of hardness; the softer the pastel the brighter the color, but the softer pastels are more prone to smearing. A fixative can be applied to help prevent smudging.
Oil pastels
A painting and drawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons. They consist of pigment mixed with a non-drying oil and wax binder.
CHarcoal
A hard black material that is made by burning wood with a small amount of air. Unless it is fixed by the application of some form of gum or resin, it is impermanent, easily erased or smudged.
A Kneaded eraser is used to erase this medium. The kneaded eraser, also known as putty rubber, is a tool for artists. It is usually made of a grey or white pliable material and resembles putty or gum.
